In fact, a > \space is needed in case the footnote is inserted inside the author > field. Please, see the attached example.
My solution seems to work fine, even within the author field (see attached screenshot and output). I don't understand at all why a \space would be needed in the place you propose (i.e. \saveFN\mymark\space) because a regular space character may already be typed by hand there... Mael.
