Wrapping epstopdf in eps2eps worked here, too, although in my case they 
don't seem to come from the same distribution (eps2eps comes with 
Ghostscript but epstopdf doesn't; found epstopdf in MiKTeX's bin 
directory).

Another mystery solved (or at least remediated).
