I haven't seen this with the same configuration. Can you use some applet that shows cpu usage or a term with top and see if the system is really hanged or if your interaction with LyX is just at fault. I have this problem (and have had it before with mandrake 8.x and lyx 1.1.x). I think the issue is more related to the window manager communication with lyx. I use E 0.16.5. The best way to force a redraw is to shade and unshade the window. What is you WM?
