If this is something you do a lot, it might be best to make a layout 
file to save on ERT.  Copy your normal layout file, and add something 
like


Style MyDefinition
  CopyStyle #write the name of the environment you were using before
End

Style MyExample
  CopyStyle #write the name of the environment you were using before
End

Save in $/.lyx/layouts and reconfigure LyX.

This should give you the same styles, but the numbering will be 
independent for MyDefinition and MyExample (which should show up in 
the menu).
