Just a comment on VMWare. I've used it under Windows NT for awhile now,
just so I can have Linux at work. (I'm not doing it the other way around,
as there was no way I would have been allowed to have Linux as the primary
OS). I've found it offers a very good solution. 

The speed has been fine. That might have something to do with me running
Linux, rather than Windows in it. I could well believe Linux is a much
friendlier OS. Also, one thing to check is that debugging info is turned
of in the VM, as that will slow it down greatly.

The VM also shouldn't be limited to 800x600. I have no problem running it
at any resolution.
