I copied the main doc's .lyx to bit-by-bit.lyx and deleted everything but the title page and the paragraphs with the citations from this copied file. Then I copied the old file to the new one section-by-section, saving and compiling each addition. The bibliography was in the resulting PDF with each addition. No differences in the two files in the copied sections, but the new one is 2K smaller in size. So there must be something invisible in the original file, but I'm not going to spend time looking for it since I now have a complete copy. Wow! Not before in the 20+ years I've used LyX have I had this issue. Thanks to all of you who offered help.
