the best thing is to have both current.

I work on Macs and do a daily update (of MacTeX, Homebrew (which will
get me the latest LyX, Perl, Python, R and RStudio), pip (package
installer for Python :-)-O), CPAN and R (modules)) by way of a rather
hefty function in my (bash) aliases file :-)-O
