Meanwhile I have made an update and when this did not help a clear
new installation of openSUSE 13.2 as well - all unsuccessful.
I cannot imagine that it has to do with my file system switch from
all EXT4 to BTRFS for root and XFS for home for everything else
runs as perfectly as before that switch.
I don't exactly remember when I did that. But I think I created
the respective LyX-documents first and did the switch afterwards.
Are you sure this is the biber log produced with the minimal example
you submitted? The biber log reads

It is thus looking for a bibtex file called "referencs.bib" [sic!]. Check if
you are loading this file (instead of the desired one) in preamble via \bibliography or
\addbibresource.
BTW you also seem to have a superfluous
\DeclareLanguageMapping{english}{english-plain}
in the preamble, presumably from a trial with biblatex-apa.

Hi Jürgen and Scott,
lacking the relevant expert knowledge I eventually resolved my problem
by means of obtrusive doggedness (and investing plenty of time - I am a
retiree since years).
All I can say is that bearing in mind Jürgens BTW statement re the
'superfluous' declaration {english}{english-plain} in combination with
trying other settings eventually did it.
Removing that silly `-plain` just wasn't enough.
It was only after changing settings in Language and Bibliography too,
that I got what I needed.
Now I have a great looking linguistic 40 pages document (at least to my
and my son's gusto!).
If somebody should be interested in these proper settings, please ask.
