[x]emacs does this, and optionally allows the output of the filter to
be inserted in the current buffer, to be displayed in a new buffer or
the minibuffer, or to be routed to another command or a file.  It
would indeed be a very useful capability in LyX, as would operations
on sentences and incremental regex search/replace capability.
