In spite of the footnotemark being protected, I got the error message: Missing number, treated as zero. ...on\protect\footnotemark[\ref{foot:first}]} A number should have been here; I inserted `0'. (if you can't figure out why I needed to see a number, look up `wierd error' in the index to The TeXbook.) In intermediate steps from six errors to this one, I tried \protect'ing everything. Only the one \protect just before the \footnotemark had any good effect, reducing the number of errors from six to just this one. For what it's worth, my version of LyX is 1.1.5fix1.
