That is the logical thing to do. IMO.
Meanwhile docbook has support for subscript and superscript, like:
Thirsty? Have some H<subscript>2</subscript>O.
here the <subscript> and </subscript> should be in latex (that in this
case means sgml) font. The same applies to superscript.
I don't know however if the html will show the resulting look.
