Page 8 of the file pdfTeX-FAQ.pdf says that pdfLatex only recognises the
following formats:
PDF, JPEG, PNG and MetaPost.
So, you'll have to convert your eps file to one of those formats. There is
a fixme after that statement about new formats, so this list may have
changed.
This is a bit annoying really, since Latex doesn't recognise those
formats. You can however, using the graphicsx, get latex and pdfLatex to
automatically load the correct version, assuming you have both available.
