I had a look at your tex2lyx patch. It turns out that this works:
\includegraphics[%
width=7cm]{"C:/Documents\space and\space
Settings/Angus/LOCALS\string~1/Temp/lyx_tmpdir1872103448/lyx_tmpbuf0/J__MinSYS_home_Angus_trial_tex_subdir_figure1"}
Note that I still need the inverted commas to delimit the file name,
so I don't think that we gain anything by using \space.
