After inserting the float could appear a little (empty) box over the caption and one under the caption, just as it is if you hit the fraction button in the formula editor. The one you populate is the one you want. The other one stays where it is and does not get a translation to LaTeX.

This is just one way which comes to my mind.

This is a very good point. It also took me a while to find this "trick" of
entering a float above the caption. Most probably much more users are confused
about this non-intuitive behaviour in the float inset.

Could the behaviour of the float inset be changed into a more intuitive one?
