I've seen no real world application where the Java port came close to C/C++
performance, let alone becoming "fast" [I have to admit that my last real
experience is two years old or so, but at this point of time we decided to
have a Tk frontend for out app after a shoot-out because Java performance
was unbearable.]

Apart from that Java is proprietary, not standardized, and does not support
a few of the concepts we like to play with. So no fun here...
