This would be possible if we had a flawless lyx->tex->lyx round trip which
is important for a few other things too.

[Latest annoying thing I found which would be solvable by that:
If you have a 'proof' style in a home made layout which insert
\begin{proof}...\end{proof} and convert it to some common layout like
'article' which does not have these things, the \begin...\end simply
vanishes. This could be solved by a lyx(homemade)->tex->lyx(article)
roundtrip that would convert the \begin{} to ERT]

BTW: How do I define a layout 'definition' that might span several
paragraphs? And how would that work with two definitions immediately after
each other?
