I don't understand this sentence.

Why? For me, there should be the distinction
"I want to set my own placement params"
and
"OK, let's use the default settings"
BUT
"I want to know what the default settings actually are!"

I don't trust a default button that doesn't tell me what it does. It is
something different in the graphics dialog, because I can see and set the
defaults in Preferences.
Actually, I'd prefer two buttons: "Float Default" for the default of the
specific float and "Document Default" for the value set in Document->Extras.

What you want can be done by just selecting none of the options. Of course we
can add a checkbox that disables all options, but besides a button.

Hmm, yes, but I'd prefer a button for this rather than a checkbox that sets
other checkboxes.

What do others think?

But unfortunately I don't know how the frontend (controller) could read the
default values from FloatList, so your solution is at least easier for me to
implement ;-)
