I had indeed a crash before starting in the debugger but could not reprouce
it once running under gdb. So there is something fishy...

Don't know. I guess not. If not, we could try to convince it...

What exactly should 'boldmath' do on screen?

Just 'bolden' everything?

Is is sufficient and/or correct to  import/export it as \mbox{ \boldmath
$\!#1\!$ \unboldmath} ?
