Indeed, I can't reproduce this now!

Note that the View->DVI of the unmodified file really, really produces a core 
dump.

Incidentally, André, I have that empty bmath macro because I redefine it in 
the preamble as

\begin_preamble
%Some of these commands are also defined as macros, but the
%macros do not allow fonts to be specified. They are 'good enough'
%for lyx, but the LaTeX typesetting is specified here
\newcommand{\bmath}[1]{\mbox{ \boldmath $\!#1\!$ \unboldmath}}
\let\newcommand=\providecommand
\end_preamble

Ie, lyx used to be unable to display boldmath chars that I wanted as boldmath 
in the output, so Jean-Marc suggested this clever trick.

Can your mathed now cope with this in a macro?
