This is not my machine. But my personal situation is not such
important: Even if the default of LyX changes, I think I can
manage to re-set up my box to use outline fonts for PS, bitmap
fonts for PDF. What matter is, as Jean-Marc agreed, LyX should
respect users' configurations for other programs (dvips, etc.).
I do agree with your suggestion for intuitive choice buttons
for output fonts. (We have only a dialog for screen fonts
setting right now.)
BTW there is a perl script on CTAN which generate *outline*
Type3 fonts from Metafont sources using mfmp/mfplain base of
Metapost.
