This is an important issue. Even though I wrote a comprehensive explanation
of bitmap/outline fonts in Extended.lyx, questions on this subject are still
frequently asked on lyx-users.

In that case the user should replace the ae package by a dummy package.

The is really no reason to use bitmap fonts (if your printer drivers are
buggy, then update them [or perhaps the bug is in acroread ?]).
But if other people don't agree with me, I suggest that the font button should
let you chose from 3 options
 - Computer Modern (default)
 - Computer Modern (outline)
 - Adobe fonts

with the 1st option being the default.
However, I still think that the default should be 2: the number of user who 
need to use bitmap fonts is probably very small.
