I agree with you that some people were overly confident about this and didn't take your reservations seriously enough. That said, however, while there have been bugs, and this one is fairly serious, it's surprising to me as well how rare those bugs seem to have been. And easy to diagnose and fix, except (again) for this one.

I use background compilation all the time, and I've never had a problem.

I'm in the process of auditing all the static variables, making them const where possible and flagging them with comments where not, so other people can check them. This is surely something we ought to have done a while ago.
