Yes, we all agree about that. Certainly we don't want to make things
hard for power users (=us!). But I think that there must be a reasonable
compromise here somewhere: To make choosing one or more converters
easier, while letting people know there are choices to be made, and
having a reasonable set of defaults. Remember that, as things are now,
the order in which things appear in configure.py determines which
converter is chosen, and selecting a new one---let alone two---is in
some cases very difficult, if the command line is at all complicated. So
having some default that we choose isn't a change. Making it easier to
choose a different one, or more than one, is.
It seems to me that a lot of the "heat" in this discussion has to do
with defaults. I'm guessing that if I were to propose a patch that made
us check for htlatex first and elyxer second, it'd cause a lot of
"discussion". I won't even ask why we do it as we do.
