This is because we don't have this character in the unicodesymbols file, because there is no LaTeX-package that supports this symbol. The strange thing is that the UserGuide in Branch doesn't contain this character. (Test it by opening the LyX file with an editor.)
So the bug is that Qt 4.5 introduces it.

On Windows I cannot reproduce this problem with LyX 1.6.2 and Qt 4.5.

This means that all greyed-out notices are deleted from the UserGuide. This 
would be a dataloss!
The UserGuide has for example two greyed-out notes in sec. "3.1.2.2 Modules".

I don't have this problem here on Windows.

So better not building LyX 1.6.2 with Qt 4.5 for the LyX for Mac installer.
