You surely meant "*most* users do not use external files". But this is of course possible and not very hard, at least for MS Word.

And I find this a red herring. The implementation I've proposed allows you to "work with external files" in the sense that the "internal" files are still linked to the "external" files in a way that allows the former to be updated from the latter. I'm not sure what more one would want. We could even have an "auto-update" flag that would, well, do the updates automatically.
"auto-update" would be interesting.
