We should choose a file format that serves LyX well. I agree with you
that OOo format is better than MS format but this does not matter
here. OOo/Word users *does not* use external files.
You surely meant "*most* users do not use external files". But this is of course possible and not very hard, at least for MS Word.

to work in unbundled mode, they do not have to unbundle.
Right, MSWord do not offer the possibilty to extract an embedded object. You have to use copy&paste.
