Hi Gregor,
I'm using 1.4.5 for productive work and have tested it with the
mentioned preference line for format latex. I have no problem to view
DVI and to export to "LaTeX (plain)".

Just to make sure. When you changed or added above line to your preferences
the export menu did not change?
To be frank I have added the line
\format "latex" "tex" "LaTeX (PLAIN)" "" "editor" "editor" "document"
^^^^^
to make sure the correct preferences file was read.
I saw the "LaTeX (PLAIN)" item in export menu and I tried the export
too. AFAICS it went all very well.
