Because toolbar buttons are simply not as expressive as Dialogs (and
key bindings even less expressive of course). For example how would
you put the line spacing controls in the toolbar? You would need 4
buttons plus an edit box. Maybe some users like the multiplication of
unrelated buttons in toolbars but I personally really prefer that this
kind of controls are gathered in one dialog.
Do you use routinely different line spacings on different paragraphs?
Me no but I do know some people that do.
Do you really believe that this is a common task?
Not when you are in writing mode of course but, when you are in the
final edition stage it could be yes. I'd prefer to not have to close and
open the dialog every time I need to move the cursor.
It not even occurs to me that line spacing should be in the toolbar...
I was thinking about paragraph justification, actually.
But then it would be much easy to modify these settings. Why would you
want to let people go wrongly that way. In a dialog at least you know
this should be a less common task that in the toolbar. There's some
contradiction in what you are saying here.
Besides how would you design an icon to reset the justification to
"default" as this ought to be the most important button? No, really, the
radio buttons are much more expressive here.
I know you won't listen to any argument I have so I will change the
default to "undocked" for now and I will forbid the docking in the
future. Is that a compromise?
