This is inlined mime attachments. It seems that Thunderbird can only
produce this sort.
According to the following URI, you can make Thunderbird produce proper
attachments:

The text in the link says:
Thunderbird normally sends attachments inline (as part of the
message body), not as real attachments.
I don't understand why they show up as attachments when reading Abdel's
posts using gmans news interface.
Btw, I failed to get gmane's web interface to deal with the attachment
properly. It's shown inline...
