According to the following URI, you can make Thunderbird produce proper
attachments:

OK I've modified the settings accordingly and am sending the last patch
fo this thread attached. Let's see how I am going to see it through
news.gmane.org and if Bo can apply it properly.

In my news reader (pine), it's shown as a separate attachment which I have
to press 'v' to view (which is fine by me). So I think it's sent in a
different way now, although gmane's web interface is still being
difficult (just like it was for me).
Can you see your own attachment properly (using Thunderbird)?
If that's the case and Bo can see it, we're good (enough).
It's hard to believe we still have these problems given how long e-mail
has been around...
