Hi everybody,

I've posted this once already; it didn't receive any attention, but it
would be real shame if this passed unnoticed given the generally assumed
lack of manpower for LyX.

Google are having their Summer of Code again this year; briefly spoken,
they're paying students to work on open source projects under the
mentorship of a project dev (about $3M in total last year); the project
gets some money as well. In the past, a couple of interesting features
have been implemented that way, and this might not only add some missing
features to LyX but also attract new devs.

Project suggestions that come to my mind:

* Change file format to something XML-based (ODT even, maybe)
* Finish GTK frontend
* ... your suggestion here ...

Most past projects set up a suggestion page in their wikis. I think this
could be some attractive option to LyX. Being only a very rare
conributor, it's probably not up to me to decide on this; I think it's
mostly the more experienced devs who would be needed as mentors. And
yes, I know you're all busy with 1.5; but apart from the submission
period in March, most work would be done only during summer...

(Based upon personal experience; I took part in GSoC 2006 working on
tree structure for Boost, but as my project isn't review-ready yet and
I'm still working on it, I won't be able to apply for LyX :-(
