Hello,

Jean-Marc recently raised the question whether an inset is really the proper solution for captions.

I didn't come to a final conclusion on my own but I think we should come to an agreement and stick with it. I think that Jean-Marc's concern regarding the customization of captions is a valid point. When converting the layout files, I noticed that some document classes have extra styles like "CenteredCaption", "CaptionBelow", "CaptionAbove". How do these layout styles relate to the caption inset? Probably not at all. Is this is problem? I don't know...

Having everything as an inset sounds very nice at first glance but meanwhile I am not so sure anymore. Where exactly do we draw the line? One rule would be: - If XXX is a general-purpose thing whose underlying concept does not vary among different document classes, make it an inset.
- If XXX is specific to a particular doc class, make it a paragraph layout.
In the case of captions, there is not definitive answer. Is there some text processing feature that can be implemented only if we know about all captions in a document? If the answer is true, then IMHO we should stick with the inset solution.

In any case, I think we should discuss this very soon, because a lot of files have changed due to the layout=>inset conversion.

Michael
