Seriously:
Do you think you-as a main developer of lyx- will
have problems to build Qt 4.x by your own?
(I assume it's a question of your principles
because even I have mangaged to compile Qt4.2
on linux, wasn't it ./configure & make? :) )
Or do you only think about the packageing?
Then, yes, this could really become a problem.
To paraphrase Bill Clinton's famous "it's the economy, stupid", this is
*all* about the packaging. LyX has a reputation of being a well engineered,
solid application because we have always made a huge effort to jump through
these packaging hoops. By and large, LyX just works.
If we need to add a few #ifdef statements to the code base, we do.
If we need to put LaTeX magic in Extended.lyx so that we don't try and use
packages that don't exist on the user's box, we do that too.
It's a PITA to begin with, but we all end up graduating as competent
engineers. Even mathematicians like JMarc who'd hate to be lumbered with
such a sobriquet.
So, I'd urge you all to continue to continue jumping through these hoops.
Your users will love you because LyX 1.5 will be packaged and ready to use
*now*. They won't be lumbered with LyX 1.4 for the next three years until
their admin next upgrades their system.
