I ssuppose it would be possible to have sme automatic portected space logic, 
provided it could be overidden. I personally like references like this[1], 
without spaces. (Various people what various different styles, so I think the 
hwole issue is a job for a macro or two).

Some journals reference what mutle article[1,12] as [1], [12] which is a buig 
mistake IMHO (it insets a gratituous comma in my setnece, possinly changing 
the interpetation). Sounds like a job for logcal style... anyone for hacking 
the \cite macro instead?
