But it isn't beyond the scope of LyX to write the protected space instead
of a regular space automatically for citations and references. Is the new
LaTeX output code written? If so, someone (maybe even me, since I'm
offended by having to do it by hand) should add this feature. After all,
this eliminates a flock of chktex warnings from LyX files written as a
normal human would expect, so it's worth doing.
