Well, this whole discussion might be moot now. What do you think of the 
proposal and the patch I sent? Does it do what you want?

But I understaned it now: theSelection->put() is never called, so it does 
not matter that it would set the clipboard.

True. But that is a more general problem: The middle mouse button should 
not do that if the selection is empty, even not on X11.
