One note though:

Fully automatic seems best, but it is also the most risky. We do not have
control over which strange LaTeX installatinopneople have, and therefore
we would need to build a robust system if it has to work on everything
out there.

I think that a static system is fully adequate. It's not like these strings 
are changing every day.  Actually, I don't think they change at all once
they are done...

I think we should adopt a development model where we reduce risks.
That implies chosing the simple solutions sometimes.
