I did notice this code change some time ago and that's all that was
needed.  As yucky a scheme as it is, the dual-purpose flag does make it
very easy to revert to the original operation.  I'll have to rethink the
footnote problem and re-investigate that sample TeX code for switching the
list depths in footnotes -- then Larry can have his footnotes printing out
"correctly" again (actually I'm surprised Larry hasn't complained about
the code change since the footnote numbering problem was one of his
complaints.  Larry?).

Considerably better than it was.  At least I can sit for an hour or more
now without being in agony.  Probably about 98% fit.  Thanks.
