Don't put too much credit to the documentation :-)  
I know it might have bugs, because I rewrote most of it when I cleaned up the
LyX server, and before I did that, the documentation for sure had lots of bugs.
;-)

But, if gBib and the tclBib tool does not rely on the pipe-out, I say just
change the code to always send something out.

Like Lgb says:  Let's focus on getting the sockets one right in 1.1, and just
get on with life.

So my opinion is this:  I don't really care provided that we don't break any
applications.  If you feel like changing it, do it.  If you think you can
manage with the query-hack, do that.  Just update the documentation accordingly
;-)

So, it's up to Stefano and Jean-Marc, IMO.
