Suggestion:

\newcommand{\exdent}[2]{%
     \advance \hsize by #1
     \moveleft#1\vtop{#2}
}%

Use as:

\exdent{0.5in}{The body of text you want to be exdented. The ``advance'' 
statement takes care of keeping the right margin in place.}
