Hi Neil. I haven't had Lubuntu fail to install. I tend not to use it as a live CD as the computers I work on are rather old and not really suited for that task.
I refurbish old PCs on behalf of a mental health charity, Contact, and they are given to Contact's members, their carers or families. What kind of processor is being used? What make and model of graphics card? How much memory is available to Lubuntu? It might be worthwhile running memtest86+ to verify that the system's RAM is OK.
