A similar issue: I try to use an Alcatel X220 modem to connect to Orange. It failed to work before. After providing the driver of that modem, it seems to have gottedn support:

It does some probing of its own, but no modem is made available. It also seems that I need to move away the plugin libmm-plugin-longcheer. wvdial works well there, and no need for waiting so long.
