Hi,
I'm looking for a cheap, small, and empty linux appliance to put a little soho firewall/proxy on without taking up more room in my house. The smallest things I've found so far are the mini itx boxes but I can't find anyone selling them in Israel. Any ideas? Thanks!

The closest thing to the mini itx that is available as commodity in israel is the Micro-Atx form factor. Beware that there is some disagreement on the exact board site (20x20 vs 17x19), so make sure both box and board share the same size (although a 17x19 board will fit in a 20x20 case). Another issue is the the PCI slots. Most cases allow only for half height cards. There are quite a few NIC's that will fit, but for some reason, most are sold without the half hight braces.

Another options are available as bare bone systems from shuttle, gigabyte and asus. For a gateway system go for the lowest priced ones (no AGP, USB 1.1 and so on), and you should have a nice (an quiet) system. Those systems usually have two PCI's and an on board NIC, so you have everything to build a reasonable firewall/router/gateway.
