Hi,
Although not sold directly in Israel, I think that the OpenBrick is what you want: http://www.openbrick.org/
AFAIK, you can purchase it online from Europe.

yes- I did. I've seen the ones at lamir but thank you anyway. unfortunately, as you said they are overkill and he also seems to have only tall cases. I'm hoping to find something as small as possible- about the size of a cdrom drive.

I think Yonah meant small in the physical aspect -- I knowLamir sell
bare-bone systems with mini-itx motherboards in them, costs around 1000nis. You should check their site, maybe it'll fit yourneeds. Do
note that these computers are an over-kill for the resources a router/firewall/proxy Linux box needs.maintanence.

I'm using www.smoothwall.org
You can download ~60MB ISO image from them, which formats disk, installs Linux + firewall, with friendly WEB server for
to put aFreeSWAN and Co included. And it even works on 486 computers ;-) Regards, Alexander
