Thanks, I ended up implementing all of your advice. I first installed
sndconfig, which detected my card type and told me it was still
unsupported. Then, I searched Google for "linux intel 82801eb" which is
what appeared in sndconfig, and reached an intel page about it:

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/linux/

There I found up-to-date drivers. I compiled and installed them, and now
the sound works perfectly.
