Hi, I've installed today Gnome2beta, and here are my impressions: First, it's quite buggy. I thought it'll be more stable a little, because the stable version should be released in about a month. Anyway they seem to fix the bugs quite fast, and some of the bugs I encountered were already fixed in the cvs.
Compiling was a headache.. Just like gnome1, and unlike its compatitor, KDE, it's based on TONS of libraries, and takes a long time. I even had to compile python2 with xml/expat modules in order for libglade to get compiled (I think it's needed only for the compilation, though. it'll be sad if it depends on python). A good word for gnome: the compilations went smooth.. no errors, seems to be gcc3.0.3 compatible (Well, most of the incompatibilities with gcc3 are with c++ and not c..). About new features: Seems like most of the changes are inside (in the libraries, api, etc..)- it looks pretty similar to the user. One of the only changes in the frontend I've seen are nice new icons. All the gtk/gnome components support unicode, including bidi- all builtin all the apps which are gtk2/gnome2 based. nice, although don't expect it to work with irc clients (and probably with icq too)- these protocols aren't working with unicode.. Another new thing (which existed merely in gnome1.4) is gconf- a xml-based "windows-registery" for Gnome. At first it frightened be, but then I thought that if it's implemented well, it shouldn't be as problematic as windows' registery is. And it seems to be nice, for now. One more noticeable change: the control panel is now viewed inside nautilus. It's quite nice. Nautilus also seems to be a little lighter. I'd be attaching screenshots unless someone provided better ones in the gnome site: http://developer.gnome.org/dotplan Good Night. - Oren ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
