What do you define as Operating System? Linux is the kernel. Nothing
more, nothing less.

What is "type of Linux"? Debian GNU/HURD is based on Hurd, so I guess you
mean Debian GNU/Linux. Each is a different OS as far as I would define
it, except I wouldn't define Debian to be an OS. Debian is an infrastructure
for writing an OS in less then 10 lines. If you look at the defaults in
Debian, then they are certainly different operating systems. For example,
an SMTP server is an integral part of an OS, and Debian uses exim by
default, whereas Red Hat uses sendmail.

What do you mean "flavour"? They often contain the same version of the
kernel, which is irrelevant since most people compile their own kernel.
So the kernel itself is often not the one that came with the distribution.

Hardly -- consider different glibc versions, and similar details.
While it's sometimes possible, it's not something I'd recommend.
