Actually, you can use them concurrently, with one monitor, using several
virtual console. like you have (normally) 6 virtual text console, and one
graphical console (for people who go for that sort of stuff, I mean ;-) ,
you can also have two virtual graphical consoles, or three or who many you
would like and still have resources to run and keys on the top of your
keyboards to access ;-)
