Thanks for sharing, Risa. I share your goal of combating hatred. Alas, I
fear that this movie does not advance it.

*Where Olive Trees Weep* is a monologue by Ashira Darwish, an Arab
journalist who studies trauma, an entirely valid topic. The trauma of Arabs
in the West Bank & Gaza is important, whether suffered under occupation of
Egypt, Jordan, Israel, or Hamas, just as the trauma of Jews is important,
whether it stems from organized armies or terrorist acts.

However, Ashira Darwish uses her experiences to demonize Jews, not to find
common ground. In this movie, she claims that because European Jews
experienced the Holocaust, all Jews (even those from North Africa or other
parts of the Middle East, who did not experience the Holocaust) have
"become like Nazis" and "think like Hitler," which is an ugly and cruel
Holocaust inversion. In truth, Israel is the only pluralistic society in
the region, where Jews, Arabs, Muslims, Christians, and Druze live
side-by-side.

>From there, she blames all conflicts in the Middle East on Jews alone,
presenting a highly simplistic view of an extraordinarily complex
situation. She closes by excusing all violence against Jews, including
suicide bombings.

I hope you'll reconsider screening this movie, as I don't believe that it
aligns with your organization's stated goals of peace, inclusion, and
combating hatred.
