Could you tell your mail program _not_ to include HTML versions of the mail? HTML works particularly bad for rendering (indented) code examples well on all computers and thus makes it harder for people to receive the same information as others. It frequently leads to bad characters like that because the HTML renderer helpfully inserts such material.
